The CSEM was founded in 1985 as a non-profit charitable foundation. Membership is comprised of individuals who practice, or are interested in, environmental medicine. Environmental medicine relates to an area of medical practice that concerns medical treatments for individuals whom have become ill due to adverse environmental factors such as pollution and allergens etc.

Health Care Without Harm is an international coalition of more than 470 organizations in 52 countries working to transform the health care sector so it is no longer a source of harm to people and the environment.
